Serving The Greater Austin Texas Area

So you’ve decided to go with granite countertops for your kitchen remodel, now what? While choosing the material of your countertops can be the hardest decision, you’re not totally done making choices when it comes to the surfaces in your kitchen. You also need to decide how you want your countertops edged.

Granite countertops can have a variety of different edges that all are unique in style and design.

It’s important to pick an edge style that fits into your overall design because once the stone is cut, it’s final. Here are some of the most common countertop edges, but there are many more to choose from.

Eased/Square

While no granite edge is left at sharp 90-degree angles due to safety precautions, Square or Eased edges will give the illusion of a square edge to your countertops with just a slight bevel on the very points of the top and bottom edge. Square or Eased edges are a very recent favorite for modern designers though some might prefer a more rounded edge for a smoother feel.

Quarter Round

Perhaps the most common edge to granite and other stone countertops, eased/square or quarter round has the top edge of the granite beveled with the rest of the edges squared off. This creates a slight curve on the top edge of the countertop which makes the counters feel smooth underhand. Eased/Square or Quarter Round edges are a more modern finish and look stunning in contemporary kitchen designs.

Bullnose

Bullnose edges are more rounded than eased or even beveled edges. Bullnose edges start further back on the stone and create a semi-circle around the edge, completely rounding off the end of the stone. This is a classic cut that will fit into any kitchen design. Bullnose edges also come in three different cuts: Half Bullnose, Demi Bullnose, and Full Bullnose. With each edge, the roundness of the edge is increased and the cut starts further back on the stone.

Beveled

Beveled edges are a way of capturing the smooth feeling of curved edges without sacrificing the neatness of straight edges. Beveled edges are squared off and then trimmed down on the top and bottom edges, creating a bridge shape. Beveled edges can typically be found in ¼”, ½”, and Double Bevel sizes.

Flat Ogee, Plain Ogee and Bull Ogee

Flat, Plain, or Bull Ogee edges are a favorite of French proverbial and traditional designs that want to imitate crown molding. The more detailed design creates a curved pattern to the edge of the countertop that adds extra detail to the finish of the kitchen and creates a framing effect to islands and breakfast bars. While Ogee edges can be an extra charge, they truly take countertops to the next level.

What Edge Fits Your Design?

While these are just a few of the most standard edge options for granite countertops any edge cut is sure to be breathtaking in your new kitchen. Each is beautiful in its own way and therefore it’s just a matter of personal preference of design for which edge you ultimately choose.
